The proposal began with the creation of a discussion group on gender in different areas of study, mainly within the field of disaster risk management. The initial formation was aided by the international consultant Luis Rolando Durán Vargas in order to gather people interested in the topic.

The group began its activities in February 2018. In the first few months, various experiences of group work on the topic of risk situations from a gender perspective were shared, along with good practices for empowering women and communities. Throughout the year, talks were held with notable professionals Montserrat Blanco and María José Chaves Groh, who supported the theoretical foundation of the group, including concepts such as gender, a human rights approach, intersectionality, equity measures, and feminism, among others.

At the beginning of 2019, two members of the group revived the initial idea, inviting interested individuals and holding more frequent meetings. This resulted in the formation of a stronger group, which carried out various projects in exploration, analysis, and research, while maintaining support, accompaniment, and sisterhood among its members. This is how the current group, Colectiva RIGEN, was formed.
